On Sunday, May 26, the 14th edition of the International Shakespeare Theater Festival in Craiova came to a close. The festival featured over 380 events in more than 70 venues.
On the stages of the Shakespeare Festival in Craiova, audiences could enjoy productions by internationally renowned directors such as Robert Wilson, Peter Brook, Declan Donnellan, Robert Lepage, Silviu Purcărete, and Andrei Șerban.
For IT technology enthusiasts, Shakespeare Dimensions offered an incursion into the Shakespearean world using virtual reality tools. In a multimedia cube animated by artificial intelligence, spectators could enjoy the recreation of famous scenes from Shakespeare's plays.
Shakespeare Village remains a significant reference as it offered visitors the opportunity to place Shakespeare's works in the context of the era in which they were created. Traditions and customs of the time were presented by artisans and writers to interested attendees, ensuring the message was understood by all ages and cultures.
The National University of Theatre and Film "I.L. Caragiale" in Bucharest (UNATC), as a co-organizer of the Festival, strengthened the educational aspect of the festival by organizing over 100 events in unconventional spaces. The educational workshops were held under the patronage of the Romanian National Commission for UNESCO (CNR UNESCO). Two theatrical game workshops, led by UNATC representatives, took place at two educational institutions in Craiova, affiliated with the UNESCO Schools Network: Gheorghe Bibescu Technological High School and Stefan Odobleja College. On this occasion, students presented the costumes they chose for their selected Shakespearean characters, an activity proposed by CNR UNESCO to all ASPnet schools in Romania.
The two events were attended by the rector of UNATC and the Secretary General of CNR UNESCO, who presented symbolic distinctions to the school leaders and coordinating teachers of the two schools.
We also note the presence of Ambassador Simona Miculescu, President of the UNESCO General Conference (2023-2025), at some events.
As a sign of recognition of the importance of the International Shakespeare Theater Festival in Craiova for strengthening cultural and artistic education in our country, Ms. Madlen Șerban, Secretary General of CNR UNESCO, presented distinctions to Mr. Emil Boroghină, Founding President of the International Shakespeare Festival Craiova, Mr. Vlad Drăgulescu, President of the Festival, and Mr. Liviu Lucaci, Rector of UNATC.
