Round table ”Freedom of expression: the ESC in UNESCO”

CNR UNESCO in partnership with the UNESCO Department "Interculturality, Good Governance and Sustainable Development" at the University of Bucharest (UNIBUC), Faculty of Philosophy, in collaboration with representatives of the Faculty of Journalism and Communication Sciences at the University of Bucharest, organizes on December 6, 2021, from 15:00 to 17:00, the online round table "Freedom of expression: the ESC in UNESCO".
The celebration of the 65th anniversary of Romania's accession to UNESCO and the establishment of the Romanian National Commission for UNESCO is an opportunity to address the fundamental values and principles of UNESCO, among which freedom of expression is essential.
In a time of profound change, inequality and unrest, UNESCO has stepped up its efforts to defend and promote freedom of expression, independence and media pluralism, as well as building inclusive knowledge-based societies supported by universal access to information and the innovative use of digital technologies. According to UNESCO, communication and information, together forming one of the 5 major programs of UNESCO, are basic elements at the foundation of healthy, democratic societies.
UNESCO has a specific mandate to promote the "free flow of ideas through word and image" through free, independent and pluralistic media. Freedom of expression contributes to peace, sustainable development, the assertion of human rights. UNESCO supports and inspires policies for the safety of journalists and independent journalism based on professional ethics and self-regulatory principles.
The association of freedom of expression with the other major areas of UNESCO, namely education, science and culture, is the challenge that this event proposes.
